Ugly Politics

Published on April 8, 2010 by Farah Kalbouneh

This is really too much.

Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament for six weeks just to release the same plan he had before his “recalibration” break. His explanation for killing half his government’s legislation and sending MPs home early keeps changing, but rest assured it had nothing to do with questions about Afghan detainees.

Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals are playing games proposing motions that they cannot even get their own members to support. The recent vote on a Liberal bill to direct the government to consider all means of promoting maternal health failed, after several Liberal MPs realized that Ignatieff was playing wedge politics with an explosive issue.

Canadians will not be fooled by these antics – it is clear that neither of these parties deserves to control our tax dollars and set the agenda for the nation.

Jack Layton’s New Democrats are serious about the business of running Canada. Two NDP-sponsored bills have recently put before the House of Commons; one allowing the government a way to release documents related the mistreatment of Afghan detainee while still respecting national security concerns; the other, recently passed, would place restrictions on the executive power of the Prime Minister to prorogue Parliament on a whim.

Only one party continually and consistently acts in the interests of average Canadians, fighting to lower small business taxes while arguing against massive tax cuts for multinational corporations that are cutting jobs in Canada. We have opposed the punitive Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) since the beginning, a principled stand which neither the Liberals nor Conservatives will take.

I am running for the NDP in the next federal election because I believe in our party platform and leadership. New Democrats have pragmatic and realistic solutions on how to make Canada a more compassionate and livable place – for everyone. I want to hear your ideas as well.
