Education

Problem:

Education is becoming less accessible to the average Canadian. With tuition fees tripling since 1990, average undergraduate debt has risen to over $37,000.

The New Democratic Party tabled the Canadian Post Secondary Education Act to bolster Canada’s college and university system – linking reliable federal funding to provincial commitments to improve both quality and affordability for students. Frankly, all the Conservatives have done is break their promises about protecting federal post secondary education funding.

NDP Solution:

  • Launch a Fix Student Aid Campaign calling for lower interest rates on student loans. The goal is to ensure students graduate with manageable debts or none at all.
  • Provide a $1000 grant to all undergraduate who qualify for student loans
  • Keep tuition fees affordable
  • Support the Canadian Post-Secondary Education Act, which links reliable federal funding to provincial commitments to improve both quality and affordability for students.
  • Fix student aid by calling for lower interest rates to ensure that student debt is manageable.
  • Ensure fairness for Ontario students, who receive the least amount of federal aid money.
  • Keep tuition fees reasonable to allow access for all Canadians.

Conservatives on education:

  • “Tuition fees are the prevue of provincial governments.” – Stephen Harper. Is this the type of leadership you expect from Ottawa?
