Jobs
Problem:
Every day 150 jobs are lost in Canada. Something needs to be done to stop and reverse this! Close to a million and a half Canadians are unemployed, and many of those working have part-time or poorly paying jobs.
The New Democratic Party believes that the investment in green technologies is one of the best ways to stimulate our economy and bring back well-paying manufacturing jobs. Part-time/contract/casual “McJobs” will not save us.
NDP Solution:
- We want to promote Green-Collared Jobs Strategy that would lead to tens of thousand more Canadians finding quality jobs manufacturing products such as renewable energy systems and high-efficiency building materials.
- Focus on Job-trade strategies in order to prevent the exportation of jobs outside of Canada.
- Invest in “green” infrastructure and technology to create thousands of quality jobs in manufacturing through the Green Collared Jobs Strategy (this is already working in BC!)
- Invest in a new workforce strategy that will help workers build new skills, adapt to new technologies, maximize their career opportunities, and learn about their employment options (this is already working in Nova Scotia!)
- Increase the federal minimum wage.
- Focus on job-trade strategies in order to prevent the relocation of jobs outside of Canada.
- Promote products that are made in Canada!
Conservatives on jobs:
- Are opposed to increasing the federal minimum wage.
- Job creation numbers are roughly 30,000 jobs short of the Conservatives own estimates
- The average Canadian household is over $100,000 in debt, which is about 50% higher than average annual earnings.
- Conservatives were handed a surplus when they took office. Since then they have created a $56 billion deficit. Unemployment numbers, however, remain fundamentally unchanged at 7.6%
