Taxes
Problem:
Conservatives in Parliament and Liberals in the Legislature introduced the HST in Ontario in spite of overwhelming opposition from voters (74% opposed). The new tax applies to most everyday items, including hundreds of items that were not taxed under the old GST.
NDP Solution:
- We’re listening. We opposed the new tax because you asked us to. This is the kind of leadership you can expect from a New Democrat government.
- Drop the 5% federal sales tax on home heating, making life more affordable for Canadians.
Conservatives on the HST:
- Bill was rushed through Parliament subverting any true democratic debate.
- They claim that they are for lowering taxes and they have cut the GST. However, they have added taxes on many products and services that were not taxed before the HST. This includes an 8% hike on gas, home heating, food, school supplies, airline tickets and the list goes on.
Liberals on the HST:
- Supported the new tax at both levels of government.
- Mr. Ignatieff said he would “..decide on my own sweet time” how federal Liberals would vote on the new tax. With 74% opposition, he clearly was not thinking of you when he supported it.
